Parties With No MP

The Problem

Under the First Past The Post system, whether in its present form or when improved by the addition of the ProFirst MPs' proportional voting power system, it is still the case that any party which gets no candidates elected to Parliament is not represented and so all the votes it received across the country are completely wasted.

The Supernumerary Option

One possibility, which is an add-on to the main ProFirst system, is the allocation of so-called "Supernumerary" (that is, "above the usual number") seats. Any party polling at least the equivalent of the average vote for all winning candidates in the particular part of the UK would get a Supernumerary Seat. If their total vote was twice the average, they would get two seats, and so on.

The Proxy-vote Option

An alternative possibility, which is now being considered as a realistic enhancement of the basic ProFirst system is the Proxy Vote. This allows any voter who does not wish to vote for any candidate in their own constituency to select a "proxy" box on the ballot paper. Their vote will then be distributed among winning candidates from parties not standing in that constituency.
